Many southern cities in Guangdong and Guangxi also saw thunderstorms. Provinces like Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Jiangsu and Yunnan's northern and western parts are still under alert for heavy downpours, but some of the other areas are expected to clear up soon. The torrential rain has led to extensive water logging.

Eight people are dead and four still missing as extraordinary rainstorms have wreaked havoc in South China's Guangdong province.

560,000 people have been affected, with an economic loss of 10 billion yuan, or US$160 million. Goods are scattered and drenched. One business owner says the rain came all of sudden and submerged his goods.

"We tried to pile up clothes to form a blockade. But it was useless, because the clothes just started floating. The water is one or two meters deep"

In neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, school kids in Yulin are stranded. Over a thousand middle school students have been trapped in their classrooms, after an unexpected downpour hit on Friday.

The campus was flooded with water a meter deep after the local river burst its banks. And it's no better in East China's Jiangxi province. Farmlands in Yongxin County are inundated.

Heavy rainfall started Thursday and affected almost 300 thousand people, forcing more than 2 thousand to be relocated. An estimated 250 square kilometers of crops have been damaged.

" All the mulberry trees have drowned. And seeds that were already sown in the farmlands have undoubtedly all been drowned," said Wang Xiaomao, Deputy Director of Village Committee of Paixing In Yongxin County.

Disrupted traffic, toppled houses and homeless residents along the streets. The heavy rainfall has hit many southern and eastern provinces in the country.

Although evacuation work is underway and the weather in some of the severely hit areas is clearing up, the meteorological authority says more rain is expected over the weekend.

Provinces like Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian and Yunnan, will see precipitation of up to 130 millimeters within 24 hours.
