French Open: Defending champ Wawrinka beats Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

To tennis now, and Stan Wawrinka's began defense of his French Open against Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic. The Swiss defeated Rosol in the semi-finals of the Geneva clay-court tournament last Friday.

But, Rosol would play with confidence on this day, knowing he can play with the big boys famously stunning Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2012.

The Swiss seems out of sorts in the opener and Rosol produces a lovely drops shot for winner at 2-2 in the first set. The Czech laters grabs the set 6-4.

But the man known as Stuckey in some circles is able to find his game in the second, the running forehand cross-court passing shot is too good. The champ takes the frame 6-1.

Rosol, the world number 59 is able to regroup in the next frame, and unleashes a wicked backhand winner that helps him take the set.

Wawrinka does not want to give up his french open title to easily and after a stuning 31-shot rally, that we will only show the end of -- the Swiss smashes it home, and he grabs the set to force a decider.

And in the final frame -- Wawrinka would be the agressor and is on match point -- third seed closes things out with the volley at the net. He holds grabs a 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory and moves onto the next round.

"It's a good thing to get through, but it's never, never the best to start with five-set match and not play your best tennis. You always want to play good tennis and win matches in three sets. But today I'm really happy with the way I find solution. It's really good victory, good win for me," said Stan Wawrinka.

Fifth seed will meet Kuznetsov in second round

Fifth seeded Kei Nishikori at the top of your screen resumes his first round match against Simone Bolelli after rain halted the play. The Japanese is already up two sets, when he is able to get another break in the third, when his opponent cannot return this serve.

Nishikori finishes things off with his fourth ace of the match in taking the third set 6-3. He now will meet Russia's world number 40 Andrey Kuznetsov in the second round.

Murray trailing Stepanek 3-6, 3-6, 6-0, 4-2 when play halted

Second seed Andy Murray in white is in action against Czech veteran Radek Stepanek. The 37-year-old Stepanek shows off some crafty moves with the clever drop shot.

The qualifier takes first set 6-3, and Murray nets forehand to give Stepanek break of serve in the next frame, as he will lead 2-sets to love.

Murray though mounts a comeback and is 5-0 up in the third, and Stepanek nets backhand - giving Murray the frame at love.

Murray then starts quickly in the fourth set, breaking Stepanek's serve and would forge ahead into a 4-2 lead.

But the light has grown considerably murky when the players eventually come off court, taking the contest into a second day.

In other matches Canada's Milos Roanic was a straight sets winner over Janko Tipsarevic. local favourite Richard Gasquet beats Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets, tenth seeded Croatian Marin Cilic fell to Marco Trungelliti 6-7, 6-3, 4-6, 2-6.
