To observe the significant moment, a gala was staged at the Pak-China Friendship Center  Sunday. Sun Weidong, China’s Ambassador to Pakistan, opened the event with a speech emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange.

“Ladies and gentlemen, cultural exchanges are one of the most important pillars of China-Pakistan relations. We have always encouraged artists and cultural groups from both countries to conduct cooperation and exchanges, which have deepened mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples,” Sun said.

A performing-arts group from Hunan Province staged music, song, dance, and acrobatics to a packed house. Among the offerings was a rendition of a folk song popular in Pakistan, which prompted cheers from the audience. Pakistani performers also took to the stage.

“I have been in China for four years, during which time I learned Chinese. Since I came back to Pakistan, I have been very interested in Chinese culture. So today’s performances remind me of the time I spent in China,” said Gulshan, a member of the audience.

“Chinese Film Week 2016” also began over the weekend, screening four renowned Chinese films.

Islamabad has also welcomed exhibitions of Chinese folk arts, handicrafts, cuisine, and photography.

China and Pakistan established diplomatic relations on May 21, 1951.
