In Beijing, there's a lot of love for the Philadelphia Orchestra and for their vivacious conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Now, they're back in town after stops in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and joined by famed Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

The Philadelphia Orchestra -- one of the world's best -- are a favorite with Beijingers. And they lived up to their fame at the NCPA.

Led by the charismatic Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Music Director since 2012, the orchestra played Sibelius' 'Finlandia', and Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Sheherazade'.

These, according to Yannick, are among the orchestra's showpieces.

"The most important thing when we tour as the Philadelphia Orchestra is to represent our sounds the best way possible. So I try to bring on tour different pieces. I think these pieces like Jean Sibelius, they are all in the DNA of the orchestra. And this is where we can really taste what makes us special. So this is why we show these pieces," Yannick Nézet-Séguin said.

But when Lang Lang came on and played Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 1, in a special guest performance, his consummate artistry combined with Yannick's uninhibited style to magical effect.

The Philadelphia Orchestra has deep roots in China. Back in 1973, they became one of the first Western symphony orchestras to debut in China. And they have played an important role in cultural exchange between China and the United States ever since.

The Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick will play their second Beijing concert on Thursday, with Bruckner's Symphony No. 4, and Mahler's arrangement of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 11.

After that, the orchestra will continue their Asia Tour to Macao, as well as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kawasaki in Japan.
