Xi underscores challenges, calls for better care

China's Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee has held a group study on the challenges posed by an ageing society. During the meeting, President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the committee, called for better care for China's ageing population.

President Xi emphasized the importance of meeting the needs of the growing number of elderly people, and solving the social problems associated with this. He said that although the nation has improved elder care, much remains to be done adding there is a quite a big gap between reality, and elderly people's expectations.

President Xi called for more efforts, especially in areas like pensions and medical insurance. He also urged more supportive policies for elderly people at home, particularly in rural areas. China has more 220 million people aged 60 and above, who account 16 percent of the total population. This number represents the world's largest number of senior citizens.
