Fighting between the Islamic State and Syrian rebels near the Turkish border has killed at least 27 civilians and 41 combatants in the last two days.

The Islamic State militants on Friday first cut off the rebel-held town of Marea from another key insurgent-held town, and then entered on Saturday. The group reportedly used at least two car bombs in the assault. This will be their biggest territorial gain in the northern province of Aleppo in two years.

Meanwhile, Jaysh al-Thuwwar, the ally group of US-backed Kurdish YPG militia, has taken over a village west of Marea on Saturday, apparently in a rare agreement with the Syrian rebels.
