Here in China, severe floods are affecting many parts of the country's south. Sveral rivers have swollen to levels higher than those of 1998 --- a year thousands died, and millions were displaced by floods. This round of rain is expected to last till Saturday.

Zhejiang, the northwestern part of Jiangxi and Chongqing have been experiencing downpours. The national weather authority forecasts thunderstorms for southern China, including Jiangxi, Guangxi, and Shanghai. Authorities have been advising various departments to take safety and disaster prevention measures. Floods have disrupted traffic, as well as damaging houses and farmland.

Some areas in downtown Nanchang City in Jiangxi Province seemed a waterworld. This car, for example, almost submerged into floodwaters. Most roads are almost impassable to light vehicles. A 20-minute drive before could now take one hour.

Public buses are also forced to take other routes. Railway routes were affected by floods as well, causing the Nanchang Railway Bureau to cancel six train trips.

Continuous rains have also triggered landslides, like in this provincial road. Authorities say it will take them days to clear the debris.

In Zhejiang province, over 50 residents got trapped by rising flood levels. Most of them have been rescued and are now taken to relief shelters.

"It started little, then the flood came rushing beginning from 9:45 PM. It all happened so quickly. Good thing we ran fast, otherwise, we would have been trapped inside," Local resident said.

In southeast Fujian province, floodwaters submerged an orchid base.

"All three of our flower greenhouses are flooded, along with 400-thousand pots of orchid. My biggest concern is if another flood comes, all the orchids will die," Manager of orchid base Li Suihui said.

Days of heavy rains have damaged more than 26,000 hectares of crops in Hubei Province, resulting in direct economic losses of more than 400 million yuan or about 61 million US dollars. China's weather agency forecasts heavy rains will continue until Saturday.
