COLOMBO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 47 people received treatment after a major fire at an army camp in Kosgama, just outside Colombo while one soldier was killed, officials said on Monday.

The Health Ministry said most of those who sought treatment in hospital suffered from various ailments and were discharged after receiving medical care.

The military said that the fire which broke out on Sunday evening had been brought under control by early Monday morning.

Residents living over 1 km from the army camp were allowed to return to their homes after being evacuated last night.

The fire resulted in multiple explosions, forcing the police to evacuate nearby residents.

Army spokesman, Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said that the fire erupted at an armoury and spread in the camp.

He said that the air force and navy assisted in attempts to douse the flames while the Colombo Fire brigade had also been deployed.

Army Commander Chrishantha de Silva inspected the camp on Monday and an investigation had also been launched.
