In a speech, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Palestinians will not accept less than the end of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state after 49 years of Israeli occupation. Abbas said East Jerusalem must be the capital of the state.

Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights of Syria and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula in 1967. It pulled out from Sinai following the 1978 peace treaty signed at Camp David with Egypt.
