Lavrov: NATO's military expansion 'worrisome'

06-07-2016 13:02 BJT

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called NATO's military expansion to its borders "worrisome". The remark comes as thousands of military personnel from NATO are taking part in huge drills in Poland.

At a press conference after talks with the visiting Finnish Foreign Minister in Moscow, Lavrov made clear that Russia has the power to defend its own security.

He said, "The expansion of NATO's military infrastructure to our borders to engage in military activities with other countries of the bloc causes our negative attitude. Russia has the sovereign right and power to secure its safety by the methods that are reasonable for today's risks."

Lavrov said "serious" politicians would know that Russia would never attack any NATO member state, and NATO is well aware of that.

He added that NATO is labelling Russia as a threat in order to justify deploying more troops and weapons in the region.

Russia's permanent representative to NATO Alexsandr Grushko also refuted claims of a potential threat to Poland from Russia, calling NATO's assumption "ridiculous". He said Russia is fully aware that attacking Poland equals to attacking NATO.
