A big day for Chinese high school students. China's national college entrance exam, Gaokao, starts today. Around 9.4 million students are sitting the grueling two-or-three-day tests, which aim to screen and select candidates for higher education.

The exam papers can vary from province to province, but this year 26 provinces are using the same. The Education Ministry said emergency measures should be rolled out to deal with any disasters that could occur during the exams, such as earthquakes, torrential rain, floods and disease outbreaks.

Meanwhile, education authorities have taken anti-cheating measures. A national campaign has been launched to crack down on the sale of wireless devices for cheating, unauthorized Gaokao-related content online and substitute exam sitters.
