You can easily tell Ramadan is here. The lanterns fill the streets and Egyptians buy them for their homes too.

"We want to buy the lanterns so our kids can play with it and be happy. There are more varieties than before with different prices, expensive ones and cheaper types. I found a good one but I'm trying to bargain for a lower price,"  Housewife Um Karim said.

Egyptians prepare themselves for Ramadan by purchasing food. Certain types of food are popular during this month.

"We have the Egyptian Ramadan juice, people like to buy dates. There are several types of dates. Vegetables are also in demand and as well as salads," Selller Hussein Kamel said.

Though it's a month of fasting, food consumption increases by 20% in the Ramadan. To ease the burden on its citizens, the government established hundreds of outlets around the country that sell food stuff at lower than market prices.

"There are many Ramadan foods that has increased in prices. Not here . Here we kept the prices as it is. Especially dates, fruits and vegetables. Here we are trying to balance the prices so people can afford it," Seller Haj Ibrahim said.
