Today (Tuesday), about 9.4 million Chinese high school students are sitting a very important exam, the national college entrance exam, or Gaokao in Chinese. This is considered a turning point for these teenagers, especially those from rural areas.

The country has taken various measures to ensure the exam is a fair one. Cheaters have a higher stake this year. For the first time, students found cheating will face a criminal penalty of up to seven years imprisonment. The exam papers can vary from province to province, but this year 26 provinces are using the same.

The number of students sitting the test has generally seen a decrease. This year, a 20,000 drop from 2015. The peak was in 2008, with over 10 million registrations. In 2013, the number dropped to 9.2 million, and than back to the level of around 9.4 million again.

In some regions, that decrease is even more obvious. For instance in Beijing, with 61,000 registrations this year, the number almost reduced by half of that in 2006.
