Russia says any intervention from a third party in the South China Sea will only raise tension in the region.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova says development in the South China Sea is closely related to security and stability in the western Pacific. Zakharova urged all related parties to continue using political and diplomatic approaches, and to hold direct dialogues and discussions without using force.

Russia believes that disputes should be resolved based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as well as the Declaration on the Code of Conduct on the South China Sea. Russia supports the code of conduct in the region created by China and ASEAN countries.
