It's standard practice in China for the Communist Party to operate a branch in all state-owned companies, and to encourage management and staff to join.

Now, that's also becoming more commonplace in foreign companies. In Shanghai, home to nearly 800 multinational companies, party leaders are seeking to strengthen their influence.

Shanghai, as the birthplace of the Communist Party of China and the starting point of the Revolution, has witnessed 95 years of progress.

Since the nation opened up its market in the late 1970s, party branches have existed in foreign companies. Now over 40,000 foreign companies are operating in Shanghai. But how are those working in party branches performing their political responsibilities, while under great pressure to make a profit?

GE’s headquarter in Shanghai has 14 party branches and over 600 party members. Party members with previous working experience in state-owned enterprises feel a great difference between the two.

"Indeed there are many hurdles to the party building work in foreign companies, such as the highly mobile workforce, the weakened party spirit, and a lack of applications for party membership," said Wang Dongya, party general branch secretary of GE Energy Connections Group.

But problems like these have never stopped the party.

Wang said, "We split up and re-arranged things so that members in the same department are in the same branch, so they can hold activities with their colleagues. Also, we targeted the management group and have admitted about 10 executives into the party."

Their efforts have paid off.

"I came to GE last April and I soon found out many of my outstanding colleagues were party members. That’s why I submitted my application for party membership in August. I wanted to stay close to outstanding peers," said Li Xiang, trainee of GE Industrial Solution Group.

Along with the development of foreign companies in Shanghai, the party branches and members hope to play a more active role in serving and building bridges among people.
