Trade and investment is a key driver of ties between China and Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel is visiting China this time accompanied by a twenty-strong business delegation. The CEO of Germany's economic development agency has stressed the visit's importance.

I think it's important that the two governments have good relations, and support trade between the two countries' enterprises. So it's a very important visit. Merkel's frequent visits to China have reflected the countries good relations. And I think it's also important support for our economic activities," said Dr. Benno Bunse, CEO of Germany Trade & Invest.

But with frequent trade and economic trades between China and Germany, there're are also concerns in Germany over outflow of technology and job opportunities. There has been a rise in protectionism in Germany as well as in Europe as a whole as more Chinese companies expand into Europe. But Bunse thinks such investments should be seen as a development opportunity.

"This has always been talked about. In the 1980s, there were heated discussions about Japan when the country had a strong economy. I think Germany is an open country with regards to investment. We treat Chinese investors the same as German investors, and we welcome Chinese investment. It'll be good for our economy if Chinese investors have interest in us. I think the controversy will be settled and will not become a lasting problem," Bunse said.
