During her visit to China, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the role of an independent judiciary and the need for a level playing field for foreign firms.

On the sidelines of her trip, we spoke to the EU Chamber of Commerce President Joerg Wuttke about China-Germany investment relations. He stresses that more needs to be done to balance the two-way flows.

He said, "Luckily China has developed a keen interest in Europe, billions flow in. Last year, 20 billion euro flew from China to Europe and only frankly 9.3 billion came from Europe to China so unfortunately we happen to be more interesting to the Chinese than unfortunately Europe is interested in China. The region's benefit, the companies' benefit and we like more of this."

"The problem is do we show the same openness here for us that our Chinese colleagues get in Europe. And that increases the discussion of like okay, not a single deal from China was rejected in Europe, but so many deals are not even contemplated because of the access problems. So hopefully the kind of openness and success stories that Chinese companies hopefully generate in Europe hopefully inspire the leadership to open up here."
