Third seeded Austrian captures fourth title of season

The final of the Mercedes Cup in Germany. The rain interrupted match was finished Monday on a small sidecourt due to water damage to the main venue, and Austria's Dominic Thiem beat local favourite Philip Kohlschreiber in three sets to claim his fourth title of the year, becoming the first man to win titles on all three surfaces this season.

Also in Germany, the Halle Open got underway as the second seed from Japan, Kei Nishikori took on Lucas Pouille in the first round where more rain meant only four matches were completed on the first day of play.

Second seeded Japanese comes back to reach round two

Nishikori in the far court would have his hands full against France's Pouille in the first set who takes the frame in a tiebreaker with the lunging volley, much to the satisfaction of his coach.

But the second would be all Nishikori as he comes to the net to put away a volley of his own and later take the set 6-1.

The third would be close, but Nishikori now has match point. A big serve and Pouille sends his return long so Nishikori is moving on after a three set win.

Belgian fifth seed hangs on to beat Croatian

David Goffin at the top of your screen serving to 19-year-old Croatian Borna Coric. The Belgian Goffin is seeded fifth at this tune up event for Wimbledon while world number 49 Coric is unseeded, but there isn't much to separate them in this encounter. Goffin plays a drop shot and is then able to put away a forehand in the corner. He later wins the first set in a tiebreak.

But Coric would return the favour in the second as he disguises the drop shot before taking the point and later the frame in a tiebreak.

Goffin would edge ahead in the third and now has match point. He fires a backhand deep and Coric flubs the return giving the Belgian the set 6-4 and a spot in the second round.

Unseeded American beats fourth seed from France

Now we go to London where fourth seeded Richard Gasquet in the white shirt was facing Steve Johnson at Queen's Club. The American sends a forehand deep to the corner which opens up the court for a shot down the line and he would claim the first set in a tiebreaker.

The unseeded Johnson on course for an upset here as he now has match point against the Frenchman. Johnson gets a bounce off the net and then takes it with a backhand and he is moving on to the second round for the first time.
