Iran FM: Syria and Iraq conflicts won't be solved by military alone

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has said ongoing conflicts in Syria and Iraq can't be resolved by the military alone. He made the remarks at a press conference in Norway.

"We need to agree that there is no military solution in any of these cases although there could be a military component where you need to defeat extremists, but even for defeating extremists you need more than a military strategy. You need a comprehensive strategy to dry up the sources of new recruits for extremists and the sources of new financing," said Mohammad Javad Zarif Iran's foreign minister.

Zarif also urged the United States to make more efforts to remove the psychological remnants of sanctions. He will meet with US Secretary of State, John Kerry, in Oslo on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that the EU was engaging with companies and banks to do business in Iran following the signing of the nuclear deal. She also mentioned that trade between Iran and the EU had increased by 22 per cent in the first four months of this year.
