The Berliner Theatertreffen, the most significant event in the world of German theater, has been an annual fixture in Berlin for more than 50 years. And now this showcase has come to China for the first time, as part of a push for more on-stage exchanges between the two countries. That means audiences in Beijing and Shanghai can now enjoy up close presentations of three of Germany's most renowned productions -- "Common Ground," "John Gabriel Borkman," and "Waiting For Godot."

Yugoslavia, a country that no longer exists, from which many people fled to Berlin – on the run – in search of work and another life. This is the background of the German play "Common Ground," which is among three classics set to be presented in China.

Audiences in Beijing and Shanghai will be able to see for themselves parallels to the experiences of migrants fleeing conflicts today, and learn how are the children war crime victims live alongside the children of the perpetrators.

Between 2016 and 2022, the Theatertreffen will bring a selection of plays to China on a yearly basis. The 2016 program in 2016 was put together by a German-Chinese jury. The three shows demonstrate the diversity of Germany's theatrical creations, and present current issues, debates, and stage work trends from that country to a new fanbase. Organizers believe that the exchange event will benefit both sides.
