As part of the Belt and Road initiative, an increasing number Chinese enterprises, such as Harbin Electric Corporation, have set up businesses in Central Asia. The company is not only involved in the construction and upgrading of the energy sector in Uzbekistan, but also greatly contributed to the friendly relations of both countries.

Wang Zhuoying has been working for this thermal power station in Uzbekistan since last year. He came to Uzbekistan when his daughter was just three months old.

“I am aiming to go home after finishing this project this September. My child doesn’t know me anymore as I left home when she was a hundred days old. I hope by the time I am back she can call me dad. This is very important,” Wang said.

To ensure a safe construction environment for the thermal power project, Wang and his colleagues are providing training to the locals.

“We are delighted to have our Chinese colleagues here, who bring new technology for the station. Our equipment were all worn out, but Chinese equipment are advanced. We can feel the speed and quality of construction. We are also learning everyday,” said power station employee Vasily.

Project manager Zhuang Honggang said cooperation in the energy sector is an important part of the Belt and Road initiative. More than 500 Chinese employees are working in Uzbekistan to help upgrade the country's infrastructure.

“The entire electricity sector in Uzbekistan, including both hydro and thermal power stations, need to be upgraded,” Zhuang said.

“Our project is part of the government’s plan to renovate old facilities. Our project has been promoted nationwide in Uzbekistan as a flagship project. We will continue our journey and take solid steps.”
