With only two points from two draws, Portugual needed a good result against top of the pool Hungary in order to avoid an early exit from Euro 2016. Cristiano Ronaldo obliged with a strong performance as the Real Madrid man set two Euros records, first for appearances and then as the only player to score in four different editions of the continental competition.

Zoltan Gera smashed Hungary into an early lead with a stunning volley from the edge of the box in the 22nd minute.

But Portugal equalized three minutes before half time when Nani fired a powerful left-footed strike into the bottom corner after a through ball from Ronaldo.

Hungary went in front again in the 47th minute as skipper Balazs Dzsudzsak’s free-kick deflected off Andre Gomes before flying into the net.

Ronaldo makes it 2-2 three minutes later, flicking in Joao Mario’s cross past Gabor Kiraly from close range.

But Dzsudzsak put Hungary ahead 3-2 in the 50th minute with his second of the match via a deflection off Nani.

And Ronaldo came to the rescue again in the 62nd minute, heading home Ricardo Quaresma’s cross and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

The other match in Group F saw Iceland taking on Austria. And the smallest nation in Euro 2016 opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Jon Dadi Bodvarsson coolly steered the ball home after a flick-on in the box.

Austria equalized in the 60th minute when Alessandro Schopf collected midfielder David Alaba’s pass and slid it into the bottom right corner of the net.

But the highly touted Austria was stunned by the tournament debutants when Arnor Traustason scored with the last kick of the game to give Iceland a 2-1 victory that sends them through to the knockout stage and the Austrians home.

So Hungary finish first in Group F based on goal difference while Iceland’s win means they will face England in the last 16. Portugal are third with three draws and that will be enough to see them through as one of the four best third placed teams, but the big surprise is Austria’s early exit.
