Chorus group from NE China preps for Choir Olympics

From language to music. It's the 'Hunger Games' of the choir world. Okay, maybe not that intense but it is called The World Choir Games and it's a major international event that has been dubbed 'The Olympics' of choirs. This year's showdown will be held in Russia's resort city of Sochi. We take a look at one participating choir group from Shenyang city of northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The halls are alive with the sound of music. Choral music, as members of the Liaoning Qunxing Chorus Group practice for the World Choir Games to be held in Sochi from July 6th to July the 16th.

With the oldest choir members in their 60s and the youngest just over 20, the group has a dual mission: to showcase their singing prowess, and to meet new friends.

"We want to use music to build a bridge of friendship and spread the voice of peace to people all over the world," said Shi Jiannan, Conductor of Liaoning Qunxing Chorus Group.

This year over 10,000 contestants from more than 70 countries including the United States, Germany, and Russia have registered for the Games.

Since the World Choir Games were inaugurated in Austria in the year 2000, it has been held every two years and has become the most dynamic and influential choir event around the world.
