A group of international law experts have voiced their doubts over the South China Sea arbitration case unilaterally initiated by the Philippines. They say the way the case has proceeded is questionable. Abdul Koroma, a former judge from the International Court of Justice, said the purpose of the jurisdiction of the arbitration tribunal is to resolve dispute, and any move that fails is invalid.
"The purpose of the arbitration, or judicial settlement is to resolve the dispute peacefully. That is the objective. And any decision or determination that may not lead to the achievement of that objective in my view, would not be considered a success," Koroma said.
