The torrential rains have put a strain on China’s flood defenses, with water levels of some major rivers continuing to rise.

According to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, 117 rivers are seeing water exceeding safe levels.

For the first time this year, back flows from the Yangtze River have been seen at China’s biggest freshwater lake, Poyang. Another two major lakes, Dongting and Taihu, have also seen water levels above the warning line. Taihu saw the third highest level of water in history Monday morning.

As rains continue, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze are under increasing pressure of flooding.
