The 2nd China Original Play Exhibition has lowered its curtain in Beijing. Over the course of more than 3 months, performing groups from more than twenty provinces and autonomous regions have presented 179 shows - truly a feast for theatre-goers.
The classic revolutionary drama "Red Crag"
The classic revolutionary drama "Red Crag" serves as the grand finale of this year's event. The play is adapted from the novel of the same title in the nineteen-sixties. It was set in Chongqing during the Chinese Civil War in nineteen-forty-nine, and featured underground communist agents fighting an espionage battle against the Kuomintang.
The story continues to resonate with the public despite social changes over the years involving China's reform.
"I'm a CPC member and the story of the martyrs have touched me a long time ago. We should learn from them and serve the people. Watching this play brings back a lot of memories," said an audience member.
Initiated in 2015, the China Original Play Exhibition is set up to promote the performing arts and domestic productions. The event lasted for more than 3 months, with more than 100 performances. There were also seminars, as well as theatre workshops held in schools and various communities.
