Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill. The two leaders agreed to enhance economic relations and step up bilateral cooperation on various regional and international issues.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill.

Xi Jinping said the bilateral relationship has achieved great progress since the two countries established diplomatic relations forty years ago. He said China wishes to raise the strategic partnership to a higher level.

Xi Jinping said China appreciates Papua New Guinea's adherence to the One China policy. It now wishes to expand trade and economic cooperation in infrastructure, energy and agriculture, and collaboration in international and regional affairs.

O'Neill congratulated the Communist Party of China on its 95th anniversary, and appreciated China's long-term support and aid to his country.

He said Papua New Guinea respects China's stance on the South China Sea issue. It will continue its efforts to enhance bilateral economic cooperation and communication on multilateral regional and international affairs.
