China has urged the United States to stop 'sending the wrong signals' to Taiwan independence forces. The island's new leader Tsai Ing-wen contacted several US congressmen, during a visit to the US last month. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei urged the United States to honor its commitment to the one-China policy, the principles of the three joint communiques, and to oppose Taiwan independence.
"We insist on handling Taiwan's external contacts under the principle of the one-China policy, and oppose any countries that have diplomatic relations with China conducting any official association or contacts with Taiwan. The United States should handle Taiwan affairs with care and stop official contacts with Taiwan in any form, to stop sending the wrong signals to Taiwan independence forces and to avoid harming China-US relations," Hong said.
