While Alberto Contador wishes he could participate in Rio, golfing star Rory McIlroy feels differently. The World Number Four, is preparing for this week’s 145th Open Championship, and has no regrets about skipping the Brazil Games.

The Northern Irishman has decided against playing because to health reasons, and he says he probably will not even watch the Olympic golf event, saying that he would view “the sports that matter.”

McIlroy understands, as one of the stars of the game, he should help promote the game of golf, but he wonders if that really falls on his shoulders.

“I don’t feel like I’ve let the game down at all. I didn’t get into golf to try and grow the game. I got into golf to win championships, and win major championships. And all of a sudden you get to this point, and there is a responsibility on you to grow the game, and I get that. But at the same time that’s not the reason that I got into golf,” McIlroy said.
