At the 5th World Peace Forum in Beijing, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui says the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague overstepped its authority, and misused law in adjudication. He said the South China Sea arbitration award is impairing regional peace and stability.

"The South China Sea arbitration is a typical case filled with political bias. The arbitration was unilaterally initiated by the Philippines, with the appeal based on political purposes. The formation of the arbitral tribunal and the arbitration award are concocted to serve political purposes. This goes against the spirit of the rule of law. It disregarded state law and norms of international relations, while setting a bad international precedent," he said.

The Vice Foreign Minister added that the South China Sea arbitration award is full of mistakes, as it disregards legal procedures, as well as evidence and facts. He said it has no justice, credibility or binding force. Zhang says the arbitration award damages the authority of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS. He claimed the award also poses a challenge to the basis of modern international law and international order. (TAKE SOT)

"The South China Sea arbitration award will have no impact whatsoever on China's territorial sovereignty or its maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea. China opposes and does not accept any action based on the arbitration award. No country, organization or individual is entitled to exert pressure on China on the basis of this unlawful award, or affect China's determination to maintain its territorial sovereignty and its will to maintain international justice," he said.
