China’s capital city Beijing has been lashed by torrential rains Wednesday morning. The local weather authority has raised a yellow rainstorm alert, warning of possible heavy floods and landslides in the suburban mountainous areas.

Several roads in downtown Beijing have been inundated by floodwaters, affecting commuters and motorists. The authority has also added more buses to major routes to ease commuter build-up.

There has been at least one confirmed death, while 34 people remain missing after heavy rains hit north China’s Hebei province Tuesday.

The province’s weather bureau has raised a red alert for rainstorms, the highest one in the four-tier weather warning system. It advises people to prepare for secondary disasters like floods and landslides, as torrential rains will continue throughout the next few hours.
