As the conflict continues in South Sudan, the African Union is preparing to send in troops to stabilize the country. And it has dismissed President Kiir's opposition to their move.

Officials close to AU Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma say preparations already are underway and that there've been meetings of army chiefs from the region on the plan.

Still no timeline though and the AU also wants UN approval first and likely financial support too.

Wednesday's protests in Juba make no difference, officials say. They say it's not up to Salva Kiir to agree or not and that he must co-operate with the African Union on the deployment of the force to avoid bloodshed.

For many observers, there are parallels here with Burundi. Back in December 2015, the AU resolved to send in troops to quell the troubles there.

But the AU was forced to back off when that country's president Pierre Nkurunziza refused to agree.

Whether the AU will stick to its guns this time remains to be seen.
