The thought of clean athletes continues to take a hit -- as the IOC has announced a further 45 failed drug tests. These latest positive results are from re-tests from the Beijing and London Games, and that includes 23 medallists.

So this latest batch of results brings the number of failed tests due to re-examination up to 98.

Of the 45 failed tests 30 were from Beijing, including 23 medallists, and 15 were from London. The IOC did not say if any of the London athletes won medals.

The IOC stores samples for a decade in order to re-test using newer methods or to look for new drugs.

All athletes found to have infringed anti-doping rules will be banned from competing at the Rio Olympics, which begin in two weeks.

The third and fourth wave of tests are expected to continue throughout and after the Rio Games.
