Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the closure of more than 1,000 private schools, and extended the period in which some suspects can be detained without charge.
Erdogan issued the decree using powers under the state of emergency that began on Wednesday. The government says the state of emergency will enable authorities to swiftly and effectively root out supporters of last weekend's failed military coup. It says at least 246 pro-government police, soldiers and civilians died during the attempted coup.
