Turkey has issued arrest warrants for 42 journalists as part of a greater crackdown on government dissenters following the failed coup that occurred earlier this month. Meanwhile, Tens of thousands of supporters of Turkey's ruling and main opposition parties have united in a rally to denounce the coup attempt.

The cross-party "Republic and Democracy" rally was held on Sunday in Istanbul's central Taksim Square. In a rare move, pro-government channels broadcast comments made by main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. He called for the fair trial of the coup supporters, and urged authorities to abide by the rule of law.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, has tightened his grip on the country. In his first decree since declaring a three-month state of emergency, Erdogan ordered the closure of thousands of private schools, charities and other institutions.
