Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with US Secretary of State John Kerry in the Lao capital Vientiane on Monday. Both sides agreed on the need for a peaceful resolution to disputes in the South China Sea. They also agreed on the need for more political negotiations.
"During the remainder of President Obama's term, we need to make joint efforts to achieve more tangible results that can benefit our two peoples and pass on a stable and good bilateral relationship to the next US administration. This is a very important consensus we both agreed today," Wang Yi said.
"I would encourage President Duterte to engage in dialogue, in negotiation." "I want to emphasise the peaceful settlement of these disputes is absolutely critical we think to all of us.""The United States of America does not take a position on the side of one claimant or another claimant," John Kerry said.
The Chinese foreign minister also met with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se. Wang Yi said the deployment of the "THAAD" missile system in South Korea will damage mutual trust between China and South Korea. He said it will also have a negative impact on the situation of the Korean Peninsula and regional peace. Yun said South Korea will strengthen communications with China to enhance mutual trust.
