China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has met with his US and Canadian counterparts at the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Vientiane.

In his meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Wang Yi said the recently released joint statement on the South China Sea issue indicates a common regional desire that parties directly involved resolve the issue through dialogue.

Kerry said the US supports a resumption of bilateral talks between China and the Philippines. After meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion, Wang Yi pointed out that China and ASEAN members are dedicated to resolving disputes through a "dual track" approach.

Dion said Canada doesn't take sides over the South China Sea issue and expects the joint statement will ease tensions in the region.
