China and Russia will hold naval exercises in the South China Sea in September. Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Yang Yujun made the announcement at a news conference on Thursday.

"This is a routine exercise between the two armed forces. The drills aim to develop the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership, deepen bilateral military cooperation, and enhance the ability of the two navies to jointly deal with maritime security threats. They are not directed against third parties," Yang said.
