Typhoon Mirinae landed on the southern tip of China last night. And weather authorities say the coastal areas won't escape, that's Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi. Mirinae is bringing gales and rainstorms in the coming  days. And a respite from the heat, something the country certainly needs. The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are still baking in the strongest heat wave this year where temperatures hover around 37 degrees Celsius. And this sweltering heat is expected to move north in the next few days.

Summer heat. When nothing feels right except chilling in the shade or in the cool of former bomber shelters. Some are dealing with the heat wave, the strongest this year, head on. And indoors.

In this hospital in Zhengzhou, Henan province, more than 100 machines for boiling medicinal herbs, have workers in a stew.

Zhang said air-conditioning doesn't help much.  He and his colleagues have been working 10 hours a day, producing thousands of bags of medicine.

Chen Xiajun also has first-hand experience of the heat gauntlet. The traffic policeman has been on outdoor duty since March.  He says he now has a new outlook.

"I'm so often told 'how tanned you are' that it's nothing to me now.  But when a passer-by gave me the thumbs-up yesterday and thanked us for our hard work, I felt everything I do is worthwhile," Traffic policeman Chen Xiajun said.

Rain is forecast in a few days. By then, the heat along the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, will finally ease off.
