In Tibet, heavy downpours have caused flooding and landslides in Mangkang county. And that's blocked off an important section of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway.

The road surface has sustained considerable damage, with several parts on the verge of collapse. One stretch of highway running nearly 300 meters is completely destroyed.

Elsewhere in the badly-hit county, police have evacuated more than 300 stranded locals and tourists. Repair work on the highway is in progress, but is expected to take at least one week.

"Repair work is difficult because of the rapid water flow. Over 300 meters of the road is damaged and that's a big task for us," said Zhang Faming, rescue team chief engineer.

"Our next step is to reinforce the roadbed using steel bars. Then we'll fill up the submerged parts of the road. We'll try to get traffic flowing as soon as we can."
