Erdogan seeks tougher grip on intelligence, military

07-31-2016 12:32 BJT

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he wants to bring the spy agency and military chief of staff directly under his control as a result of the failed coup.

President Erdogan said in an interview with a private broadcaster that the moves aim to bring the military under civilian control.

This would require a constitutional change, as both the general staff and the intelligence agency now report to the prime minister's office.

The president also said military academies would be shut down and replaced by national defense universities. He said a total of ten thousand, one hundred and thirty seven people have been formally arrested following the coup.
