Palestinian official: Peace agreement critical in defeating terrorism

A top Palestinian official has said the defeat of extremist groups such as ISIL would only be possible once Palestinians and Israelis reach a peace agreement.

"If we want to defeat terrorism and these thugs and murderers called ISIS and others," said Saeb Erekat, Palestinian Authority Chief Negotiator.

"We need to really ensure that peace is done between Palestinians and Israelis and here we do not need to reinvent the wheel – it's two states on the 1967 lines, and to ensure that we can provide a better life for our people in the region."

The chief negotiator for the Palestinian Authority spoke with reporters following a meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and US Secretary of State John Kerry in Paris on Saturday.

The two sides discussed a potential two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The US State Department said Kerry is not proposing any fixed calendar for the development of the talks at his point. But he is hoping to make progress to create the right conditions for a resolution.
