The strong typhoon arrived early Tuesday, packing winds of up to more than 150 kilometers per hour. It is expected to sweep across the cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou and over to the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Power supply was cut off for thousands of residents in Shenzhen. Before Nida landed, more than 1,000 ships had returned to port and nearly 100,000 people were evacuated.

Seven cities in the Pearl River Delta, including Zhongshan, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai, have suspended work, production, and school classes.
