22,000 evacuated in south China's Guangdong Province

In south China’s Guangdong province, Typhoon Nida has caused direct economic losses of more than 280 million yuan (U.S.$43 million) since it landed in Shenzhen city Tuesday morning.

The strong typhoon packing winds up to 151.2 km per hour is moving northwest at 25 km per hour, and is expected to sweep across the cities of Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhaoqing to Guangdong's neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The typhoon lashed the province with gale force winds and torrential rain. Local authorities said some 22,000 people were evacuated, and nearly 50 square kilometers of crops and almost 500 houses were damaged.

In neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, most tourist sites were closed as the typhoon swept in. Nida is expected to move west to Yunnan province on Wednesday.
