2004 champ Du Li looks to win first event of Games

The first gold medal of the 2016 Summer Olympics will be awarded at the National Shooting Center in Deodoro, for the 10m air rifle event which takes place Saturday. One of those were her eyes on the top prize is veteran sharpshooter from China, Du Li, who will be looking to repeat her golden triumph from the 2004 Athens Games. 

Du had her first training session in Rio on Monday morning, and is still recovering from jet leg, the four-time Olympian finished one hour early. Du owns two Olympic golds from the 2004 and 2008 Games, and the 34-year-old looks to win her third in Rio. Du's teammate, Yi Siling finished her training a little bit later than Du. Yi is the defending champion in the event, and together with Du, they form a formidable duo for China.

Earlier Monday, the Chinese diving team, arrived in Rio de Janeiro following a nearly 30-hour flight. The dominant divers won 33 gold medals for their country in the previous Games and they are expected to continue their winning ways in Brazil. Among them is four-time Olympic champion Wu Minxia, who will compete in the Synchronized 3m springboard in what will be her last Olympics.

And another Chinese team with major expectations, women's volleyball, also arrived in Rio where they received a warm welcome from local Chinese people. One of the most popular squads in the PRC, Lang Ping's girls had spent two days in Sao Paulo, where China has set up its training base. It's the second time for Lang to coach the side at the Olympics with her previous stint 20 years ago in Atlanta, when Lang guided her team to the silver medal. First up for China in Rio is the Netherlands on Saturday.
