Chinese weightlifter sets new world record at 307 kilograms

Day Two of competition at the Rio Olympics would see China taking aim at gold in the women's 10-meter air pistol. Guo Wenjun came in seeking a third title to add to her triumphs in 2008 and 2012, but would fail to reach the final. Instead, Zhang Mengxue would be the star for the PRC, making a memorable debut. Dan Williams breaks down how the Chinese delegation fared.

Zhang Mengxue established a lead midway through the final match-up, and pulled away with a 10.9 perfect shot in the final rounds. The first-time Olympian seals the victory after prevailing in a face-off against Vitalina Batsarashkina from Russia. Zhang scoring 199.4 points in 20 shots, 2.3 ahead of her opponent.

It was an Olympic record under the new finals format. The 25-year-old giving China its first gold of the Games. Batsarashkina would get the silver, while Anna Korakaki from Greece takes the bronze.

In the pool, Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao were the favorites in the women's three metre synchronised springboard. The Chinese duo showed peers by completing every difficult move in almost perfect fashion. Italy's Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape would try to stay within reach of the Chinese. In the final round, Wu and Shi would seal the gold medal, finishing with 345.6 points, about 30 points clear of way ahead of the second placed Italians. The Australian team would grab bronze.

The 30-year-old Wu is now the Olympics' most decorated female diver, topping former partner Guo Jingjing. She has five golds, one silver and one bronze. 
And in weightlifting -- the 56-kilogram men's would be a battle between China's Long Qingquan and defending champion Om Yun-Chol of the DPRK. The Korean strongman would power up 169-kilos in the clean and jerk to go ahead.

Long, the winner in 2008, would manage to muscle-up 170-kilos in his final attempt to usurp Om, and grab the gold medal. His combined total of 307 kilograms, in the snatch and clean-and-jerk sets a new world record and hands China their third gold of the Games. Thailand's Sinphet Kruaithong would round out the podium.

Elsewhere, there was a first gold medal for Kosovo, as Majlinda Kelmendi won the women's under-52 kilo judo title.
