Belgian authorities have released the identity of the attacker responsible for a machete attack that wounded two policewomen. The incident appears to be the latest in a string of jihadist attacks in Europe.
Belgian prosecutors say the attacker was a 33-year-old Algerian national, known to police for criminal acts, though having no previous links to terrorism. He was shot and killed by police.
Saturday afternoon’s attack took place outside the main police station in the city of Charleroi, around 60 kilometers south of the Belgian capital, Brussels. It left one of the police officers with “deep wounds to the face,” while the other suffered minor injuries.
