Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday in St. Petersburg as the two countries move to restore ties. 

Erdogan announced at a joint news conference that Russia and Turkey would reinstate their annual bilateral trade target of US$100 billion.

The meeting also paved the way for Turkey to restart food exports to Russia, and resume Russian charter flights to Turkey.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation in energy. This was Erdogan's first foreign trip since a failed coup attempt last month.

"We buy 28 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia. Eighteen billion cubic meters are bought from the state and 10 billion cubic meters are bought from the private sector," Erdogan said.

"Therefore, Turkstream will have two gas pipelines: Turkey will use one of the pipelines and we will send gas to Europe with the other. It is among our priorities to construct these pipelines. I believe that this process will be accelerated in the coming period."
