The duo of Gong Jinjie and Zhong Tianshi were in position to bring the PRC their first-ever cycling gold. The duo among the favourites in the women's team sprint.

The Chinese pair outracing Daria Shmeleva and Anastasiia Voinova of Russia in the final to take the gold, while the bronze went to Germany, who defeated Australia. Gong and Zhong set a new world record of 31.928 seconds in the first round, after breaking an Olympic record in the qualifying round.

Wang Zhen claimed China's first athletics gold in Rio by winning the men's 20km racewalk. The 24-year-old finished in one hour, 19 minutes, and 14 seconds -- falling just 28 seconds short of the Olympic record set by his countryman, Chen Ding, at London 2012. Compatriot Cai Zelin takes silver, 12 seconds behind.

IRAN’S KIANOUSH ROSTAMI TAKES 85-KILO TITLE

Kianoush Rostami of Iran won the gold medal in the men' 85kg weightlifting by breaking his own world record. Rostami lifted 179-kilos in the snatch, and 217kg in the clean and jerk, for 396-kilos in all. Tian Tao of China won the silver at 395kg. 

ALMAZ AYANA FIRST IN WOMEN’S 10,000 METERS

Ethiopian sets new mark of 29:17.45 in long distance competition

Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana smashed the world record to win the women's 10,000-meters. The 24-year-old finished in 29 minutes, 17.45 seconds, to break the previous record held by China's Wang Junxia by more than 14 seconds. Defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba grabbed bronze.
