To football now and quarter-final action from the women's tournament. China would battle Germany for a spot in the semis. The Germans two-time world champs would look to get past the Steel Roses in an effort to continue their quest for a first ever Olympic crown.

The game would be scoreless till late in the second half as Melanie Behringer of Germany scores the opening goal in the 76th minute.

China catch a break in the 83rd minute as Wang Shuang is fouled in the area, and is given a penalty kick. 

However, Wang's penalty hits the post, and Germany hold on for a 1-nil victory and advance to the semi-finals, while China are ousted from the tournament. 

SWEDEN UPSET USA 4-3 IN PENALTY SHOOTOUT

And Sweden knocks the defending champions the USA out of the Olympics. The Europeans prevailing 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the squads played to a 1-1 draw. 

Lisa Dahlkvist converted Sweden's final penalty after Alex Morgan and Christen Press missed for the holders in the shootout. 

This marks the first time the U-S have not made the final since soccer was included in the Olympic programme.
